The Department of Medical Biophysics at the Medical Research Institute is dedicated to quality in research, and graduate and postdoctoral training. The research interests of our Department are broadly based with strong programs in:

  1. Applications of Laser and ultrasound in medicine and biology
  2. Cell separation and differentiation
  3. Sonodynamic therapy
  4. Photodynamic therapy
  5. Bioimpedance
  6. Medical Imaging Techniques
  7. Medical Instrumentation Design
  8. Biological effects of electromagnetic waves, electric fields, and magnetic fields
  9. Radiation Biophysics
  10. Applied spectroscopy
  11. Nanomedicne

Research Plan:

The research strategy of the Medical Biophysics Department stems from the general research strategy of the Medical Research Institute with strong programs in:

- Ultrastructural studies using Transmission Electron Microscopy for differential diagnosis of different pathologies.

- Iontophroresis technique for transdermal drug delivery using electrical field.

-Electrochemotherapy for enhancing therapeutic and reducing side effects of drugs using the electrical field.

- Nanomedicine for the preparation and characterization of different nanoparticles and nanocomposites and their medical and environmental application.

- Dielectrophoresis technique for the separation and differentiation of cell lines associated with different types of cancer.

- Laser for photodynamic therapy.

- Ultrasound for sonodynamic therapy.

- Determining and screening of body-composition and bone health status associated with differentpathologies (CKD, renal failure, Obesity, Type II Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Hypertension, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, HCV, etc.) using the Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and Tetrapolar Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA).

- Identification, monitoring and diagnosis of sever and chronic heath conditions and pathologies (Lukemia, Breast Cancer, Type II Diabetes, Chronic Rhinosinusities, etc.) and industrial pollutants using Electronic Nose (E-Nose) technology.

About:

This department is one of the important departments in the Medical Research Institute that has many scientific activities and cooperate with many departments in medical biochemical researches. It holds many training courses in the field of medical biochemistry and molecular biology for under and post graduated student every years. It participates with medical biochemistry and molecular biology researches in many national and international conferences every year. The staff members of this department are lewelve highly qualified university professors, three assistant professor, one lecturers, two assistant lecturers, two demonstrator and three of well trained technicians.

The department was established in 1967. It is the only department that provides genetic services to the residents of Alexandria and the near by governorate. It has a genetic clinic, a cytogenetic laboratory which provides chromosome analysis and prenatal diagnosis, a biochemical laboratory for screening of inborn errors of metabolism and a molecular laboratory for molecular diagnosis of genetic diseases. The department offers genetic counseling for all our patients.
